How this list works

We look at five things for every property: the rooms, the food, the leisure spaces kept well apart from the casino, how easy the place is to reach, and what there is to do within a short drive. We do not grade the gaming side and never describe it.

About position one. Number one belongs to the publisher, and ownership alone is why it heads the page; numbers two to ten follow our editors' own reading of each place. We are the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi, owners of Four Winds New Buffalo, so a stay there benefits us directly.

All 10 resorts in view

No. 1 Lakeshore base Great Lakes Publisher's own resort

Before you pack

Which months suit each region?

Around the Great Lakes, late spring through early autumn is peak time: beaches, harbour towns and patios are open, while winter turns snowy and quiet. The Arizona and California desert stays feel best between October and April. Tulsa and the Mississippi Delta run hot and sticky in July and August, which is exactly when their outdoor pools earn their keep.

Airport to resort: what are my options?

Nearest airports appear on every card. Few of these properties sit downtown, so most visitors hire a car or pre-book a driver. Hotel shuttles come and go, so count on one only once the property has confirmed it in writing.

What is the age rule at check-in?

The lead guest commonly has to be 21, though some properties accept 18, and two hotels under one brand can differ. A short call or the hotel's booking page settles it before you travel.

Will the bill be higher than the nightly rate?

Frequently. Big resorts often add resort levies, parking, pet charges or a card hold. Each card names what to raise; the property's own booking page shows the live amounts.

Can we bring the children?

Several properties suit families, and Island Resort even has its own water area for younger guests. Spas and some pools keep age limits, so check those before packing swimsuits for everyone.

Why does Four Winds New Buffalo lead the list?

Our organisation owns it. It goes first for that reason, which we state wherever the ranking appears. Places two to ten come from editorial judgement.

Can I reserve a room through mybetee-au?

No. mybetee-au only publishes. Each Check availability button hands you over to the resort's own website, and the reservation is between you and the hotel. Payments never pass through us.

Method and money

Each property earns a place through what a guest can do away from the casino: rooms worth sleeping in, dining you would choose anyway, a pool, spa or stage, and surroundings that reward a day out. We read official hotel pages, cross-check public listings and leave out anything we could not confirm. Room counts, prices and opening hours change, so we point you to the hotel rather than quoting them.

Order matters here. Four Winds New Buffalo is first because our organisation owns it, and we will not pretend that is a neutral choice. Positions two to ten reflect our view of balance, setting and range of facilities.

The site is paid for by affiliate and referral commissions: when a reader books through one of our links, a partner can pass a share of its fee to us. You pay the same. Commission never buys a place on the list. Read the full affiliate disclosure or our editorial standards.
